Read your Bible Everyday or get Scurvy!

Read your Bible Everyday or get Scurvy!

I just watched Touching Lives on TBN with James Merritt. No, he didn’t say we would get scurvy if we did not read our bibles everyday but he did make a great point. He told us of the Pilgrims story. Most died before they got to America. They were eating morning, noon, and night but not eating the right foods. They were missing the most important ingredient – Vitamin C. They developed scruvy. Their joints would swell, their teeth fell out, and their organs began to shut down. All because of one vitamin – the lack of Vitamin C.

I was changing channels on the TV. This was not by mistake that I stumbled upon this broadcast. James Merritt’s sermon is entitled “Eat Your Heart Out.”

As a busy culture, we neglect time with God. We get tangled up with the busy events of the day.

Merritt points out these facts:

  • Fewer than half of all adults can name the 4 gospels
  • 60% of Americans cannot name 5 of the 10 commandments
  • 81% of born again Christians say that God helps those who help themselves is a bible verse.
  • 12% believe that Joan of Arc was Noah’s wife
  • Over 50% of graduating high school seniors think that Sodom and Gomorrah were husband and wife

We have many people who say that they are reading their Bibles everyday. That may be so but you can get complacent and read to be reading it. So, it is one thing to read the Bible but are you living it?

It is based on these scriptures:  1 Peter 2:1-3 (The Message) So clean house! Make a clean sweep of malice and pretense, envy and hurtful talk. You’ve had a taste of God. Now, like infants at the breast, drink deep of God’s pure kindness. Then you’ll grow up mature and whole in God.

Or the NIV version:  Therefore, rid yourselves of all malice and all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander of every kind. Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, now that you have tasted that the Lord is good.

Peter tells us 3 things in 1 Peter 2:1-3:

  • We must develop a Heart for God’s Word (vs 1); Psalm 66:18 If I had cherished sin in my heart, the Lord would not have listened; 2 things are true – either sin will keep you from the Bible or the Bible will keep you away from sin
  • We need to develop a hunger for God’s Word (vs 2); Matthew 4:4 – we should not live by bread alone; consider God’s Word as a buffet
  • Develop a hearing for God’s Word (vs 3)

I admit…this really hit home to me. I do read my Bible but it hasn’t been everyday. I do try to live right. I am only human and admit when I fall. My neighbors are really making this one hard for me. I think thoughts…thankfully, I have not acted upon those thoughts. Satan tries to wear us down. At first it is very subtle and then BAM, we are in the middle of the mess “we” created. It is by design that we have free will. Free will to do what we want. Can we really afford to not stay in God’s Word? I am very thankful that even though I haven’t read the Bible everyday that I know the promises that God has for each of us. Reading the Bible is just part of it. I am going to commit to reading the Bible everyday to be able to keep my armor on. I hope this speaks to you and encourages you to be the person that God created you to be.

More scripture to ponder:

1 Peter 2:25 (NIV) For you were like sheep going astray, but now you have returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.

Deuteronomy 32:47 – They are not just idle words for you—they are your life.

The Bible is our life and gives us direction. My question is to you:  Got Bible?

Dr. Paul Perry

Dr. Paul Perry was a very special person…not just a Doctor but a kind and gentle man – everyone looks up to and admires. He and Dr. Adcock discovered my bladder condition. He saved my life and countless others.

Dr. Perry passed away this morning. He had been battling lung cancer and he lost his life to cancer but Heaven gained another soldier. He is where he needs to be – free of pain and at peace.

Prayers need to be lifted up for his family.

This is hard for everyone.

Teens and the internet – be informed

Do you realize that 10 million children are online daily? And most of the time it is between the hours of 3 – 6 pm without supervision. It is easy to type in the wrong address of look up a subject that yields bad results. Try it for a test drive. Look up whitehouse – whitehouse.gov is the good site but whitehouse.org is not (it is a porn site). Or even look up something that you think might be innocent like Dr. Seuss and look at more than 10 results. I found my search to be rather frustrating with all of the foul language I saw.

This is an ever increasing problem. Since I know computers and have taught children, I thought I would start educating parents.

Be smart. Talk to your children about the dangers. Set some ground rules. You are the parent. God tells us that we must love, honor, and obey our parents. If you start seeing behaviors such as sneaking around or clicking away from an internet page when you enter a room, HELLO – “Houston, we have a problem!”

Dangers are everywhere. The world is not a safe place even at home with online predators. Predators are everywhere – chat rooms, Instant Messaging (AOL, Yahoo, Google, etc.), or social sites like My Space or Facebook. The list is endless. The best thing to do is to get educated and keep an open line of communication with your children.

Can you read this?

What Hurts the Most

I admit I haven’t written awhile on my blog. I have been in season of major transition. God has been preparing me in ways to be stronger. I will never understand it. To some, I have given up on a relationship. To others, I should have never even been in the relationship. To me, I feel personally that the relationship was meant to be for a time. Just as God has us on this Earth. It is for a time. We are to enjoy the journey until our destination is ready to take us home to be with our Lord and Savior.

I love Fred and the kids very much. I struggled with my relationship with Fred for awhile. I was the one trying to keep it going because I am a fixer. I can do this. I wanted it to work and needed it to work. I stayed in it a little too long. I think we both needed each other in the beginning – we lost focus – we drifted apart. My relationship was not where I wanted it to be. I prayed about it and got answers I ignored because I wanted to fix it. I became sick more than usual and had to back off on going over to their house just so I could rest. By doing this, it was like I stirred up a hornet’s nest. I wasn’t doing what Fred wanted and it became all about him and what I wasn’t doing for him and his kids. It was a side I never seen before. It really brought out the selfish person in him.

I am hurting and this will all take time. I know God is all over this. He will help us all if we let Him.

On my way home from consoling a good friend of mine tonight, words came to my mind about heartache. It pretty much sums it up…..

What Hurts the Most – Rascal Flatts
I can take the rain on the roof of this empty house
That don’t bother me
I can take a few tears now and then and just let them out
I’m not afraid to cry every once in a while
Even though going on with you gone still upsets me
There are days every now and again I pretend I’m ok
But that’s not what gets me

What hurts the most
Was being so close
And having so much to say
And watching you walk away
And never knowing
What could have been
And not seeing that loving you
Is what I was tryin’ to do

It’s hard to deal with the pain of losing you everywhere I go
But I’m doin’ It
It’s hard to force that smile when I see our old friends and I’m alone
Still Harder
Getting up, getting dressed, livin’ with this regret
But I know if I could do it over
I would trade give away all the words that I saved in my heart
That I left unspoken

What hurts the most
Is being so close
And having so much to say
And watching you walk away
And never knowing
What could have been
And not seeing that loving you
Is what I was trying to do

What hurts the most
Is being so close
And having so much to say
And watching you walk away
And never knowing
What could have been
And not seeing that loving you
Is what I was trying to do

(Not seeing that loving you)
That’s what I was trying to do

In ways, Fred walked out on us a long time ago. It was about him – not about us. I feel in my heart I made the right choice because doors are opening up for me that were shut before. I am grieving – I am sad – I am mad. But I know God is there. He is my pillow and my light at the end of this long, dark tunnel. I feel His love all around me. I am trying to practice being thankful more to return my love for my Heavenly Father.

I have a long road ahead and so do many others. We must stay focused on walking with God and having a relationship with Him. Ultimately, He is our number one focus.

The meaning behind Merry Christmas

The historic record of the birth of Christ can be found in Matthew 1:18-25 and Luke 2:1-20.

Unlike any other baby, the one born that night in Bethlehem was unique in all of history. He was not created by a human father and mother. He had a heavenly pre-existence (John 1:1-3, 14). He is God, the Son—Creator of the universe (Philippians 2:5-11). This is why Christmas is called the incarnation, a word which means “in the flesh.” In the birth of Jesus, the eternal, all-powerful and all-knowing Creator came to earth in the flesh.

Why would God do such a thing? Why would he come as a baby, instead of appearing in power and majesty? Why make himself a true man and live among us, when he knew full well how terribly he would be treated?

It was LOVE! It was necessary, if you are to be saved!

Having a Mary Heart in a Martha World – Chapter 7

The Better Part

There is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part, which will not be taken away from her. Luke 10:42

“Life is filled with Hula-Hoops. We all have responsibilities, important things that need our attention.”

Remember:  “No matter how busy your life is, there is always room for more!” “First things first, the Lord was saying…Take care of my business and I’ll take care of yours.”

Author and teacher Cynthia Heald puts it this way, “We are intimate with God as we choose to be.” There are always excuses. Question is what are you going to do about it?

Making room for God is not easy. Life is always busy and there are always distractions, events, etc.

“The Better Part is not out there somewhere. It is inside us, where Christ dwells by his Holy Spirit.”

The 4 keys to keeping God first:
* Consistency – practice makes perfect.
* Creativity – journal, prayer
* Conversation

Daily is the key!

Having a Mary Heart in a Martha World – Chapter 6

Kitchen Service

Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might. Ecclesiastes 9:10

We are designed to serve others and love them for who they all. Afterall, we represent the Lord.

Paul lays it out on how to follow Christ:

“I urge you to imitate me” (1 Corinthians 4:16)

“Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me – put it into practice” (Philippians 4:9)

“Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ” (1 Corinthians 11:1)

“You became imitators of us and of the Lord….and so you became a model to all believers” (1 Thessalonians 1:6-7)

Paul wrote letters to people to be passed around to other churches. We are a living letter that is known and ready by everyone. We are God’s love letter to the world.

Fruit Happens

Fruit of our lips – “Let us continually offer to God a sacrifice of praise – the fruit of lips that confess his name” (Hebrews 13:15)

Fruit of our deeds – “That you may live a life worthy of the Lord and may please Him in every way; bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God” (Colossians 1:10)

Fruit of our attitudes – “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control” (Galatians 5:22-23)

How can we make sure we stay in the fruit of the Spirit? By staying in the word and abiding in a personal relationship with Christ.

Read God’s Kitchen Patrol – p. 87

Look for unexpected angels!

God calls us to service. Use your talents. If you still do not know your gifts, pray that God will reveal them to you. Keeping your mind busy helping others is the best medicine when you are going through hard times.

Do not forget to check your motives when you serve. If you are grumbling and complaining or want attention or praise from others, we are doing things for the wrong reasons.

We belong to the Lord! Amen. He is our strong tower, our fortress. Seek Him and you will find the most amazing treasure ever.

Having a Mary Heart in a Martha World – Chapter 5

Living Room Intimacy

“Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him, and he with me.” Revelation 3:20

What does intimacy with the Lord mean to you?

To me, I talk to him throughout the day. I find out my quiet times and I take advantage of them. It is never the same time of day but I diligently set aside some time.

What are the distractions in your life? Notice that if you do not have an active prayer life, the devil leaves you alone. The devil likes stirring up stuff to keep up from seeking the Lord.

What are you using as your Spiritual Snickers Bar? Friends, eating, family…we all have them. Even though I pray, it feels good when I cry to my friends. Is it wrong. No! God puts people in our lives to help us along but it doesn’t give us private time with the Lord. He wants us to seek Him with all of our heart and talk to Him as a friend.

We all spend time with the Lord in different ways…reading the bible, praying, listening to Christian music, etc. These are all creative ways God gives us to spend time with Him. He invites us each day. He wants you to come as you are. I know I have a long way to go before God is finished with me but He gives me a renewed spirit each day.

PRAYER + THE WORD + TIME = INTIMACY WITH GOD

Find God’s will – you can only do this through prayer. God puts things in our hearts. Be Still and Listen.

Having a Mary Heart in a Martha World – Chapter 4

The Cure

You are worried and upset about many things, but only one thing is needed. Luke 10:41-42

This is the chapter about unloaded all the unnecessary things we take on. Our rocks. I can tell you from experience that doing man’s work is like trying to run in the sand. But doing God’s work, He carries you and it becomes much easier.

Find the things in your life that you are doing that load you down. Make a list and pray about it. God doesn’t want us to be miserable. He wants us to have a fruitful life and share it with others. But if you are constantly grumbling about your rocks, is it showing others encouragement and God’s love?

Yes, we all take on too much. I still believe each one of us needs balance. Take the time and have a cup of java with the Lord. I personally have water but if you are coffee drinkers, go for it. God longs for our devotion. Mary just chose the better part.

Does it mean what Martha did was wrong? Service to others, no! But grumbling and complaining about it was not what the Lord was seeking. Often when we are tired and weary, we want to start looking what others are doing. I could easily compare myself to my sister but I know that we are different. She has a gift for talking to strangers. She says she struggles in this area (and maybe she does) but she can make anyone feel warm and welcome. Do not get caught up in the gotta have what the other has…this leads to jealousy, bitterness, etc. Plus, in order to get what someone else has (in their walk with God), you would have to go through his or her trials and tribulations. We do not always see the whole picture.

Now this what the Lord Almighty says: “Give careful thought to your ways.” Haggai 1:5

Each person has different gifts. Use what comes easy to you. Mine is computers. I can use it to email, create blogs, web pages, etc. God gives us the talents we need for a time – use it while you have it.

Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and your plans will succeed. Proverbs 16:3

Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might. Ecclesiastes 9:10

Only one thing is needed – have a personal relationship with Jesus. Get to Know Him.

God is the Bread of Life, the Living Water…

Grasp Luke 10:42

“I cannot do everything, but I can do ‘one thing.’ I cannot meet every need, but I can respond in obedience to the need the Spirit lays on my heart. I cannot carry every load, but I can carry the load God has for me. For His yoke, indeed, is easy, and his burden is truly light.”
